How to Open a Pool ... or how to get from
here to here
with a few simple steps (plus a little bit of elbow grease!).
Here's a general checklist & step-by-step list for starting your pool. For pool start-up details & audio, click here.
[ ] Remove excess water from the cover
[ ] Remove All Leaves & Debris from Cover before Removing Cover
[ ] Bring Water Level up to Normal operating level
[ ] Vacuum pool of all dirt & debris (for vacuuming instructions, click here)
[ ] Clean Liner with Off the Wall or Surface Cleaner OR
[ ] Clean Tile line with Off the Wall or Surface Cleaner
[ ] Clean Filter with Kleen It or Strip Kwik Filter Cleaner
[ ] Clean ladder treads and Winter Cover with Stow Away® Cover Cleaner
[ ] Allow opening chemicals to circulate for 24 - 36 hours
[ ] Let water Filter 1 day before bringing in Opening water sample for Testing & Analysis
[ ] Adjust pH, Total Alkalinity & Calcium Hardness as needed

Approximate Chemical Dosages for Chlorine/Bromine Start up:
UP TO 10,000 GALLONS
3 - 5 bags Burn Out Shock, diluted in a bucket of water or 6 - 8 bags Burn Out 35 broadcast over the pool
1/2 quart Back Up® Algaecide Plus Top off Optimizer Plus® (about 5 lb)
10,000 TO 20,000 GALLONS
5 - 8 bags Burn Out Shock, diluted in a bucket of water or 5 - 6 bags Burn Out® 35 broadcast into pool
1 quart Back Up® Algaecide Plus Top off Optimizer Plus® (about 9 lb)
20,000 TO 30,000 GALLONS
8 - 12 bags Burn Out Shock, diluted in a bucket of water or 10 - 15 bags Burn Out® 35 broadcast into pool
1 & 1/2 quarts Back Up® Algaecide Plus Top off Optimizer Plus® (about 15 lb)
OVER 30,000 to 40,000 GALLONS
12 - 15 bags Burn Out Shock, diluted in a bucket of water or 15 - 20 bags Burn Out® 35 broadcast into pool
2 quarts Back Up® Algaecide Plus Top off Optimizer Plus® (about 20 lb)
All Dosages are based on a Normal, Clean Opening. Make Chemical Adjustments as Needed. Don't Skimp!
Don't worry about "over shocking" a pool. You will need to satisfy any chlorine demand that exists. If you don't treat it now, it will be more difficult to treat later.
