Cloudy Water in Swimming Pools - Causes & Cures
Treatment:
Treatment of cloudy water MUST BE QUICK AND TOTAL! DON'T SKIMP!
- Clean all pool & affected surfaces as prescribed above.
- Physically clean & remove all visible algae.
- Physically clean solar blanket, pool surfaces, ladders, etc. that
could cause a recurrence of the problem.
- Look for airborne causes -- excessive dust, dirt, wind storms, that
put an additional strain on the pool.
- Use clarifying agents such as BioGuard®
Polysheen Blue or PowerFloc to agglomerate or coagulate fine particulate so
that the pool filter can more readily remove them
- Use BioGuard®
Sparkle Up in the pool filter to physically remove fine particulate and
certain heavy metals from the water.
- Add an initial dosage of algicide to the pool*
- "Shock" the pool with a triple or quadruple dose* .
After treating, shock the pool weekly to prevent a recurrence.
- Shock the pool IMMEDIATELY AFTER large pool parties, before it gets
cloudy. By the same token, before the party, boost the sanitizer
level to accommodate the extra bather load.
- Run filter 24 hours daily until water is clear & halogen or peroxide levels are maintained at a "higher" level*
- Chemically clean the filter about 2 times
each season
- Change the filter sand at least every 3 to 5
years.
- Bring in a fresh water sample about 4 days later for a retest & evaluation
- Maintain Optimizer Plus® levels
- Maintain good water balance of pH, Total Alkalinity & Calcium Hardness.
- Prevent problems by following a good Pool
Care program such as the BioGuard one a Week 3 step program (BioGuard®
Silk Tabs or Sticks, Smart Shock®
and Back up®
Algicide)
- Use the pool!

*Follow the instructions given by your pool care specialist EXPLICITLY. Failure to do so could result in harm to you and/or your pool & its components.
NEVER DRAIN your pool. The
liner will shrink, voiding the warranty and could cause damage to your pool.
In gunite, plaster, or even fiberglass pools removal of the water from the pool
could result in the pool structure "floating" and causing serious damage to the
structure.
